Emotional Taxonomy

An emotional taxonomy is a framework for organizing emotions into meaningful groups based on their underlying purpose, function, and intensity.

Rather than viewing emotions as “good” or “bad,” this taxonomy recognizes them as signals—each carrying valuable data about our needs, environment, and relationships.

We’ve grouped emotions into nine core families, each with distinct patterns and lessons:

  1. Joy & Interest – Signals alignment, connection, and energy.

  2. Fear & Anxiety – Alerts us to potential threats or uncertainty.

  3. Anger & Frustration – Highlights boundaries, needs, or values being challenged.

  4. Sadness & Grief – Marks loss, change, and the process of letting go.

  5. Shame & Guilt – Invites reflection and alignment with personal or social standards.

  6. Love & Compassion – Fuels empathy, cooperation, and belonging.

Click on each family to explore the full range of related emotions, their biological purpose, and practical strategies for working with them.
